INTRODUCTION TO REACH

REGISTRATION, EVALUATION, AUTHORIZATION OF CHEMICALS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides an overview of the remit of REACH and the increased responsibility it places on industry to manage chemical risks. We introduce you to the aims and core principles of REACH: protection of human health and the environment; enhance EU chemical industry competitiveness; and the promotion of alternative methods of dangerous substance assessment.

The training is available as a series of one-day introductory REACH training sessions. We can also arrange “in-house” sessions, customized to your obligations and roles under the regulation, addressing key industry or supply chain specific issues.

TOPIC BACKGROUND

REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) impacts all manufacturers, importers and downstream users of chemicals in the EEA. It divides industry into various segments, substances and mixtures on the one hand and articles on the other. Substances and mixtures are further divided by CAS and EINECS number and by interaction with life and the environment (the high impact ones being Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).

REACH conformity has banned problematic toxic and environmentally hazardous elements such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), phthalates, and many substances in quantities not exceeding the maximum limit in products.

REACH is required by the EU for products containing chemical compounds. It is also required by US exporters for all suppliers exporting products to the EU. Even though you may not be an exporter, you may have to still comply with these regulations. In a nutshell, Companies shipping parts or products into Europe must comply with EU REACH regulations.
